Onda Festival (Chizuken Province Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Shrine)
This festival is held to pray for a bountiful harvest for the whole year. During the festival, the unhulled rice that has been offered before the shrine deities will be ceremonially planted in a rice field to pray for a great harvest of the five main grains. First, the Onda Festival rites will be performed to pray for a harvest of these five grains (rice, barley, two types of millet, and beans), during which the planting of the unhulled rice offered to the shrine deities will be performed in the deity's rice paddy. This unhulled rice is grown in the sacred rice field, and can finally be harvested in October. During the Harvest Festival of Thanksgiving on November 23rd, the rice harvested from this field will be offered before the shrine deity. After the planting ritual, there will be a ritual performance of "Iwado Kagura" traditional court music (designated an Intangible Cultural Property by Fukuoka Prefecture).
