Akazaki Festival (Ritual Festival for Akazaki Shrine)

This festival is held around Akazaki Shrine Natural Amphitheater (a nationally-designated Important Tangible Cultural Property). In the year 1596, there was a plague among the horses and cattle here, and when the people prayed to the agricultural deity enshrined at Akazaki Shrine, the plague was cured, and it is said that the people gave thanks by performing dances here. During the festivities on the night before the festival, there will be fish-catching and a live band, and on the day of the festival there will be performances of the traditional Akazaki Shrine Gaku and Yumoto Nanjo-odori Dances, both designated as Important Intangible Cultural Folk Properties.
