Momote Festival (Miyajima)
This ritual is held annually at Omoto Shrine on Miyajima. The festival is a combination of two different rituals, the symbolic firing of the first arrow of the year on Itsukushima Island, and Omoto Shrine's Motote (arrow target shooting) ritual. As the ritual's name suggests ("momote" is written with the characters for "one hundred" and "hands"), 100 hands (100 archers) will shoot two arrows each (currently 8) to ritually fire 200 arrows. The backs of the archers feature a combination of three characters ("the former," "the latter," and "nothing") to form the word "demon," meant to warn against disagreement in the new year.
