Otaue Rice-Planting Ritual (Settsu Province Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Taisha Grand Shrine)

This sacred ritual is held at Sumiyoshi Taisha Grand Shrine to pray for a bountiful harvest. The festival began when the Empress Jingu wished for a great harvest, and called rice-planting maidens from Nagato Province (present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture) to plant rice in the fields at the shrine here. The rice-planting ritual at Sumiyoshi Taisha Grand Shrine is performed according to tradtional methods, without simplification, making it a memorable experience for onlookers. As the rice-planting is going on, a lively dance performance will be held on the center stage area, and the ending Sumiyoshi-odori dance in particular in famous, and the sight of the dancers moving in the shape of the character for "heart" is striking. The Otaue Rice-Planting Ritual, which passes down old traditions, was designated a National Important Intangible Cultural Property on February 24th, 1979.
