Tsuina Festival (Chizuken Province Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Shrine)
This is one of Chikusen Province Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi Shrine's winter rituals, including oni-sube (a fire ritual to drive out a "demon" representing misfortune) and usokae (a rite in which participants exchange figurines of bullfinches, symbols of good luck). First is the Tsuna Festival (to "hit the demon"), and the bullfinch-exchanging rite is held afterwards. The rite of exchanging bullfinches is meant to convert the "lies" that we've come to use before noticing it into "truths." Performing this rite is also meant to welcome better fortune.
