This year, too, you’ll be able to see these energetic fireflies
Beginning June 1st, Otani Sanso will begin a “Firefly Walk.” Many of our guests have been participating, and we would like to extend our thanks to them. Yamaguchi Prefecture is currently at the height of its firefly viewing season. The genji firefly originates in the Otozure River, for which the river has been designated a natural monument, and this year, the fireflies are once again making a lively appearance. *This photo was taken on June 6, 2018.
The murmuring sound of the stream makes the night even more magical
The best way to admire the fireflies of the Otozure River that runs just in front of Otani Sanso, is to experience their ecology up close. As you follow the path of the fireflies with your eyes as they fly about, soon enough they’ll be flying right in front of you, and above your head. If you stay very still, the fireflies may even land about your feet and begin to glow. Amidst the murmuring sounds of the stream and the rustling sounds of the evening, you won’t be able to see the fireflies in perfect darkness, but you’ll find the lights that they give off to the left and right as they walk quite soothing.
“Firefly Walks” will depart every day at 8:30 p.m.
“Firefly Walks,” which depart every day at 8:30 p.m, and include about 20 minutes of walking to and from the inn, are conducted by Otani Sanso staff, hoping to show guests an early summer evening that in Nagato that will truly stay with them. Anyone, from children to the elderly, is welcome to participate. In the muggy heat of summer, it’s lovely to step out in the cool evening air in a yukata, as well. (The tour location is a five minute walk from Otani Sanso, but because guests will be walking in the dark, we recommend that you wear shoes) Firefly Walks are offered until June 20th.
