[Yamaguchi Souvenirs]What is “Yamaguchi Sweet Rice Jelly,” the souvenir with which its said you can’t go wrong?

Thank you for reading the Otani Sanso Journal! Today, we’re going to introduce a souvenir sure to delight all, Yamaguchi Prefecture’s sweet rice jelly (“uirou”).

Not like any other? Yamaguchi’s Sweet Rice Jelly

Sweet rice jelly (“uirou”), is a Japanese sweet made from rice and other flours, kneaded with hot and cold water. Finally, the sweet is poured into a mould and steamed. Yamaguchi’s sweet rice jelly uses soft warabi mochi for its rice flour, creating a uniquely soft warabi mochi-like texture and gentle flavor. There are many stories about the origin of sweet rice jelly, but Yamaguchi’s is known as “white sweet rice jelly,” and is a traditional sweet thought to have developed as a flavor of Yamaguchi together with the development of the area’s Ouchi Culture.

The uniquely local flavors of “raw sweet rice jelly”

One thing you must try on a visit to Yamaguchi is its “raw” sweet rice jelly. We hope you’ll enjoy its gentle flavor. As its name indicates, the sweet rice jelly is steamed and wrapped in paper, so it’s best eaten the same day. *At Otani Sanso, we offer raw sweet rice jelly together with tea.

With its gentle flavor, sweet rice jelly is a popular Yamaguchi souvenir

With its soft texture, sweet rice jelly has the unique flavor that shows the influence of Kyoto culture on Yamaguchi’s Ouchi culture. Otani Sanso offers sweet rice jelly at the “Sasanka Camellia” Giftshop on the second floor.
